Cleistocactus strausii ‘Silver Torch’
Also known as: Silver Torch Cactus, Woolly Torch Cactus
Cleistocactus strausii, commonly known as the Silver Torch cactus, is a striking columnar cactus native to the mountainous regions of Bolivia and Argentina. This elegant cactus is prized for its upright, slender stems densely covered with fine, silvery-white spines, giving it a shimmering, woolly appearance.

It can grow up to 6–10 feet (1.8–3 m) tall and about 2–3 inches (5–8 cm) in diameter, forming clusters over time. During summer and early fall, mature plants may produce vivid crimson to magenta tubular flowers that protrude horizontally from the stems, attracting pollinators like hummingbirds.

Care Requirements:

  • Light: Full sun to partial shade (needs bright light to thrive).
  • Temperature: Cold hardy down to about 20°F (-6°C) if dry. Best grown in USDA zones 9–11.
  • Water: Drought tolerant. Water sparingly; allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Avoid excess moisture, especially in winter.
  • Soil: Well-draining cactus/succulent soil mix.
  • Growth Habit: Slow-growing but can form clumps with age. Ideal for outdoor rock gardens, xeriscaping, or container culture.

Special Features:

  • Eye-catching silvery appearance
  • Vertical growth makes it great for narrow spaces
  • Low-maintenance and beginner-friendly
