Euphorbia mammillaris, nicknamed the “Corncob Cactus,” is a unique and eye-catching succulent native to South Africa. Despite its common name, it is not a true cactus but belongs to the Euphorbia genus. It gets its nickname from its cylindrical, segmented stems that resemble miniature corncobs.
The thick, green stems are covered in conical tubercles (bumps) and may be tipped with small reddish or pinkish spines. Over time, the plant can form dense clusters. In late winter to spring, it may produce small, bright yellow flowers near the tips of the stems.
Care Requirements:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to full sun.
- Water: Drought-tolerant. Water moderately during the growing season, allowing soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering in winter.
- Soil: Requires well-draining succulent or cactus soil.
- Temperature: Best suited for USDA zones 9–11. Protect from frost and prolonged cold.
- Growth Habit: Compact, upright stems that form clumping colonies over time. Grows up to 12 inches tall.
Special Features:
- Distinctive corncob-like appearance
- Easy to care for and great for beginners
- Can be grown indoors or outdoors in containers or rock gardens
Note: Like many Euphorbias, this plant contains a milky white sap that can be irritating to skin and toxic if ingested. Handle with care and keep out of reach of pets and children.
