DESCRIPTION
La Verne Red Dragon Fruit – Rare Hybrid Variety
Cutting Length: Approximately 12" (unless stated otherwise; some may be slightly longer)
La Verne Red is a rare and striking hybrid dragon fruit variety from the Hylocereus genus, believed to be a cross between Hylocereus guatemalensis and an unidentified secondary species. This variety is named after the nursery where it is widely cultivated and distributed throughout Southern California.
This variety exhibits classic traits of Hylocereus guatemalensis, such as minimal spines and distinctive, twisting stem segments that develop with maturity—adding ornamental value and making it stand out from typical Guatemalan types.
Flower Characteristics
La Verne Red produces large, night-blooming flowers, reaching up to 15 inches in diameter. The flowering cycle from bud to full bloom spans approximately 21 days. The blooms are elegant and fragrant, typical of guatemalensis genetics.
Fruit Features
This variety yields oval-shaped fruit with vibrant red skin and long, wavy green fins that mirror the plant’s twisted stem structure. The fruit matures roughly 30 days after flowering and typically weighs around one pound.
Inside, the flesh is a vivid purple, packed with small, crunchy seeds. The flavor profile is a sweet, juicy blend with notes of melon and grape. With an average Brix level of 16–18, La Verne Red delivers a well-balanced, refreshing sweetness.
Additional Notes:
- Self-fertile and suitable for hand or natural pollination
- Fast-growing and easy to manage for both beginners and collectors
- Performs well in full sun and warm climates
Add a rare gem to your dragon fruit collection with La Verne Red—valued for its beauty, productivity, and deliciously unique flavor.
