Mammillaria gracilis fragilis, commonly known as the ‘Thimble Cactus’, is a compact, clustering cactus that forms beautiful mounds of small, finger-like stems. Native to Mexico, this species is highly sought after for its unique appearance and ease of care.
Key Features:
- Appearance: Features cylindrical, green stems densely covered in white, hair-like radial spines, giving it a soft, frosty look.
- Growth Habit: As the name “fragilis” suggests, the offsets detach easily, making propagation effortless. Over time, it forms attractive, tight clumps resembling a cluster of thimbles.
- Flowers: Produces small, cream to pale yellow flowers in a circular crown around the stem tips, typically blooming in spring to summer.
- Size: Each stem grows to about 1–2 inches tall and 0.5–1 inch wide.
Care Instructions:
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light or filtered sunlight. Can tolerate some direct morning sun.
- Watering: Water moderately during the growing season, allowing the soil to fully dry out between waterings. Water very sparingly in winter.
- Soil: Requires well-draining cactus mix to avoid root rot.
- Temperature: Hardy to around 25°F (-4°C) with protection; best suited for USDA zones 9–11.
Why You'll Love It:
The Thimble Cactus is perfect for small spaces, windowsill gardens, or container arrangements. Its delicate appearance contrasts with its resilience, making it a great choice for both beginners and seasoned collectors. With minimal effort, you'll enjoy a charming cluster of cacti that multiply over time and bloom with grace.
Great for indoor displays, succulent gardens, or as thoughtful gifts for plant lovers.
