Mexican Fence Post "Pachycereus marginatus" Live Plant

Description

DESCRIPTION

Pachycereus marginatus, commonly known as the Mexican Fence Post Cactus, is a tall, columnar cactus native to central Mexico. It is widely used both ornamentally and functionally—as a living fence or natural barrier thanks to its upright, evenly spaced stems that grow closely together.

The cactus features thick, green, vertical stems with 5 to 7 shallow ribs lined with small, uniform areoles and short spines. Mature plants can reach heights of 10–20 feet (3–6 meters) when grown in the ground under ideal conditions. In spring and summer, it may produce small, pinkish-red flowers near the top of the stems, followed by edible fruit.

Care Requirements:

  • Light: Full sun to light shade. Needs plenty of sunlight for best growth.
  • Water: Extremely drought-tolerant. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings.
  • Soil: Requires a well-draining cactus or succulent mix.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9–11. Tolerates heat and brief light frost but should be protected from freezing temperatures.
  • Growth Habit: Upright, columnar growth with minimal branching. Can form dense stands or rows.

Special Features:

  • Fast-growing and great for landscaping or privacy screens
  • Low-maintenance and drought-resistant
  • Architectural appearance with strong vertical form
  • Edible fruit and potential for flowers under proper care
